Music at St Mary Magdalen's

At St Mary Magdalen's we believe all children are musicians and as such, need rich learning opportunities to “... paint their pictures on silence. ” – Leopold Stokowski

Our Intention is to give children the knowledge and confidence to ‘...paint on silence,’ through singing, evaluating, analysing and composing, across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, tradition, and musical genres.

We believe children come to school with a lifetime of musical experience which is practical and experiential, and which has contributed to their aural memory. St Mary Magdalen's values children’s prior musical experience and seeks to deepen a love of Music for all.  We want children to be lifelong learners of Music. We want children to always be passionate about Music.

Music is a practical subject. We encourage children to think and act as musicians and as such, lessons support learning in and through music, not solely about music.  Our hope is to expand children’s imagination and creativity, and awaken untapped potential.

Our school’s core values of Love, Excellence, Teamwork, Determination, Respect underpin all we do in Music. All our children play at least one musical instrument. As musicians, we communicate these values to our school community through our public performances.

By the Summer term, all children have taken part in at least one public performance. These can range from:

  • Carol Singing to support local community initiatives.
  • Choir performances at our Parish Church’s  annual  Classical Evening; Brent Competitions and The O2 Centre’s Young Voices concert.
  • Involvement in at least one of our five Summer Concerts, showcasing our instrumentalists.
  • Musical performances in Year Group productions and class assemblies.

Music really can give "a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything." Plato
